What is the tensile strength of concrete?

Until fairly recently, only limited information was available about tensile strengths.  This was partly due to the fact that it is seldom used in design except in certain types of prestressed concrete design.  However, with the advent of the new ‘Eurocodes’, especially Eurocode 2, more information is available.

It is still not possible to give a nice simple answer, but the following may help.
